             Hamirpur District is situated between 76º 18' to 76º 44' East longitude and 31º 25' to 31º 52' North latitude. The tract is hilly covered by Shivalik range. The elevation varies from 400 meters to 1100 meters having the configuration ranging from the almost flat-lands that border the portion of rivers  to the lofty heights of cliffs and precipitous slopes of hill-ranges. There are three principal ranges which run in a South-Easterly direction. It is situated at lower elevation and  comparatively warmer but has some hilly ranges covered with Pine forests.  This district was made in 1972 by carving it out from the Kangra district. It is well connected by roads from all sides.  At present the known tourist attractions are Deot-Sidh, and Nadaun. Hamirpur town is the Headquarter of this District, which lies on Shimla Dharamshala road.  Majority of the population here comprise of Hindus. Bulk of the people speak Pahari.  Hamirpur is the most Literate district in Himachal Pradesh. The majority of its population fluently speaks Hindi.

HISTORY

 

Una and Hamirpur were created mainly as a result of trifurcation of the erstwhile Kangra district on 1 September 1972, as a consequence where of two more new districts namely also from the then existing districts of Mahasu and Shimla, new districts of Shimla and Solan were formed by re-organising the boundaries of old districts.

             Hamirpur is now considered as an educational hub of Himachal Pradesh it is the second educated region in India, male literacy is 91%, and female literacy is 76%.

           Hamirpur is home to the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, a national level public technical university funded by the Government of India. It offers undergraduate, postgraduate, and doctoral programmes in engineering, science and management.

 

Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Memorial Government Postgraduate College; It offers undergraduate courses BA/BSc/BCom/BCA and few postgraduate courses in Social Sciences/Languages. This college is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh University, Shimla.

 

           Government Polytechnic College Hamirpur; It offers three year diploma courses in Mechanical Engineering/Electrical engineering/Civil Engineering/Computer Engineering/Information Technology. This college is affiliated to Himachal Pradesh Board of Technical Education,Dari,Dharmshala.
